Does drought advance the onset of autumn leaf senescence in temperate deciduous forest trees?

چکیده
Abstract. Severe droughts are expected to become more frequent and persistent. However, their effect on autumn leaf senescence, a key process for deciduous trees ecosystem functioning, is currently unclear. We hypothesized that (I) severe drought advances the onset of senescence in temperate (II) tree species show different dynamics under drought. tested these hypotheses using manipulative experiment beech saplings 3 years monitoring mature beech, birch oak Belgium. The was derived from seasonal pattern chlorophyll content index loss canopy greenness generalized additive models piecewise linear regressions. Drought associated heat stress increased atmospheric aridity did not affect both trees, even if showed high mortality an advanced greenness. observe major differences among species. To synthesize, timing appears conservative across independent drought, aridity. Therefore, study avoid confusion studies, should be considered separately.

Changes in autumn senescence in northern hemisphere deciduous trees: a meta-analysis of autumn phenology studies.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Many individual studies have shown that the timing of leaf senescence in boreal and temperate deciduous forests in the northern hemisphere is influenced by rising temperatures, but there is limited consensus on the magnitude, direction and spatial extent of this relationship. METHODS A meta-analysis was conducted of published studies from the peer-reviewed literature that ...
متن کاملHow strong is intracanopy leaf plasticity in temperate deciduous trees?
Intracanopy plasticity in tree leaf form is a major determinant of whole-plant function and potentially of forest understory ecology. However, there exists little systematic information for the full extent of intracanopy plasticity, whether it is linked with height and exposure, or its variation across species. For arboretum-grown trees of six temperate deciduous species averaging 13-18 m in he...
متن کاملAutumn coloring, photosynthetic performance and leaf development of deciduous broad-leaved trees in relation to forest succession.
Autumn coloring of deciduous broad-leaved trees in northern Japan was found to develop either from the inner part of the crown outward (inner-type), or from the outer part of the crown inward (outer-type). Inner-type trees had early-successional characteristics, whereas outer-type trees had late-successional characteristics. Although alders (Alnus hirsuta (Spach) Rupr. and A. japonica (Thunb.) ...
متن کاملDrought during canopy development has lasting effect on annual carbon balance in a deciduous temperate forest.
* Climate change projections predict an intensifying hydrologic cycle and an increasing frequency of droughts, yet quantitative understanding of the effects on ecosystem carbon exchange remains limited. * Here, the effect of contrasting precipitation and soil moisture dynamics were evaluated on forest carbon exchange using 2 yr of eddy covariance and microclimate data from a 50-yr-old mixed oak...
متن کاملThe seed bank in an old-growth, temperate deciduous forest
We assessed the size and composition of the seed bank in 31 plots representing a range of habitats within an old-growth, temperate deciduous forest at Mont St. Hilaire, Québec, Canada. We identified 49 taxa in the seed bank, with an average of 40 species·m–2 and a median density of 1218 seeds·m–2. The most frequent seeds were species of Carex and Rubus, Diervilla lonicera, and Eupatorium rugosu...
